About the studio

A small studio that has been doing this for over a decade

Whitespace Digital designs, builds and looks after websites for businesses across Surrey, Hampshire and beyond. We are deliberately small, deliberately careful, and easy to get hold of.

Our story

Started because good websites were being sold badly

Whitespace Digital began in 2013, near Farnham, after a decade of watching small businesses get a raw deal online. The pattern was always the same: a site built quickly and cheaply, handed over with no explanation, then left to rot until it broke or was hacked. The owner had no idea who to call, and no way of knowing whether the thing was working.

We set out to do the opposite. Agree what the site needs to achieve. Build it properly, on foundations that will not need replacing in eighteen months. Explain how it works in plain English. Then stay involved, so it keeps loading quickly, stays patched, and keeps producing enquiries.

Twelve years on, the studio is still small on purpose. It means the person who takes your first call is the person who designs your pages, writes the code and answers the telephone two years later when you want a new section adding.

How we work

Six things we will not compromise on

These are not marketing lines. They are the reasons clients stay, and the reasons we occasionally turn work down.
  • Security is not a feature

A business website holds enquiries, customer details and your reputation. It gets modern hosting, hardened headers, sensible defaults and prompt patching because that is the minimum, not because it was on an upsell list.

  • Momentum matters

Projects that drift cost more and deliver less. We keep scope tight, review in the browser, and get to a launchable site in weeks. Improvements continue afterwards, with the site already earning.

  • Long-term relationships

Most of our work comes from clients we have looked after for years, and from the people they recommend. That only happens if you answer the telephone and do what you said you would.

  • Honest advice, even when it costs us

Sometimes the right answer is a smaller site, a tidy-up of what you have, or nothing at all. We would rather tell you that and keep your trust than sell you a rebuild you did not need.

  • Built for everybody

Around one in five people in the UK has a disability. Building to WCAG 2.2 AA is both the decent thing to do and straightforwardly commercial: more people can use the site, and it reads better to search engines too.

  • Ownership stays with you

Your domain, your hosting account, your content, your code. Everything is documented and transferable. We want you to stay because the service is good, not because leaving is difficult.

Being straight with you

Who we are right for — and who we are not

A supplier who says yes to everything is no use to anybody. Here is where we are genuinely strong, and where you would be better served elsewhere.

A good fit

  • Local businesses and trades who need to be found and contacted quickly
  • Professional practices — solicitors, accountants, consultants, clinics
  • Established SMEs replacing a site that has been neglected for years
  • Businesses on an unsupported platform that needs migrating safely
  • Owners who want one supplier for design, build, hosting and support

Better handled elsewhere

  • Marketplaces, booking platforms and complex web applications
  • Large e-commerce catalogues with thousands of products
  • Paid advertising management or social media content production
  • Anyone looking for the cheapest possible site rather than a durable one

If your project falls into the second list, tell us anyway — we will point you towards someone who does it properly.

Where we work

Local when it helps, remote when it does not

Being nearby is genuinely useful at the start of a project — it is much quicker to understand a business over a cup of tea than over email. After that, most work happens remotely.

We regularly work with businesses in Farnham, Alton, Guildford, Godalming, Haslemere, Aldershot, Farnborough, Basingstoke, Petersfield and the surrounding towns, as well as clients further afield who found us through a recommendation. If you would like to meet, we will come to you.

Get in touch

Tell us about your project

No forms to fill in for the sake of it. A couple of sentences about the business and what you need is enough for us to give you something useful back.

  • A reply within one working dayUsually the same day. You will hear from the person who would do the work, not a sales team.
  • A fixed price before anything startsWe quote for the whole project, in writing, with the scope set out plainly. No hourly surprises.
  • Local, if that matters to youWe work with businesses across Surrey and Hampshire, and further afield. Meetings in person or online.

Monday to Friday, 9am to 5.30pm. Near Farnham, Surrey.

A trading name is fine if you are a sole trader.

Useful if you would rather we called you back.

If you already have a site we will review it before we reply. Leave this blank if you are starting from scratch.

What the site needs to do, what is not working now, anything you have already ruled out. A couple of sentences is plenty.
